Innovative Farming: Beating the East African Drought

With rainfall patterns becoming increasingly erratic across the Horn of Africa, traditional farming methods are no longer viable. Crops fail, and livelihoods collapse. To combat this, Samora Kalosi has introduced climate-smart agriculture training to over 5,000 households.

We are equipping farmers with drought-resistant seed varieties—such as sorghum, millet, and specialized cowpeas—and training them in water-harvesting techniques like zai pits and terracing. These methods capture and retain the minimal rainfall the region receives.

Furthermore, through the introduction of solar-powered drip irrigation, farmers are now able to cultivate high-value vegetables year-round. This shift not only guarantees food security for their families but also provides a surplus to sell at local markets, ensuring financial autonomy in the face of climate adversity.
